People are forgetful, and we need special things to jog our memories from time to time. In the Bible we find many such reminders. After God destroyed the world in a flood, He told Noah, “Whenever you see the rainbow, remember my promise that I will never destroy the earth by water again.” So, every time we see a rainbow, we can remember God’s promise.
There are various days and times in the Bible designed to help us remember specific events. God uses these specific events to jog our memories and help us remember important things. Worshipping on Sunday helps us remember Jesus’ resurrection. It was on the first day of the week that Jesus was risen from the dead!
There is also a meal of remembrance. It was the night before Jesus’ crucifixion that he gathered with His disciples in the upper room to celebrate the Passover together. The lamb had already been killed, and its blood offered as a sacrifice at the Temple. The disciples were gathering together to eat the roasted lamb, the bitter herbs, the unleavened bread, to partake of the fruit of the vine and the other ingredients of Passover. It was to be an evening of remembering, as God had long ago commanded them to do. But as they ate, Jesus gave them something new, something greater, to remember. Jesus “…took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this … in remembrance of me.’”
No longer were some of the ingredients of the Passover meal simply to be a reminder of their release from Egyptian bondage. Now the bread and the cup were to be constant reminders of Jesus – of His sacrifice and His love. That’s why Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” We have much to remember. What do you need to remember today?
