What do you think is the greatest problem facing people today? I believe the greatest problem facing people is TEMPTATION!! It isn’t famine or wars or natural disasters (like Hurricane Ian hitting Florida now – as bad as that is!!). It isn’t our economic challenges. Each of those are problems, and they require lots of attention. But our biggest problem isn’t a circumstance; it’s a state of the heart. It’s TEMPTATION!
If we weren’t tempted, it would be hard to get into trouble. If we didn’t get into trouble, we wouldn’t start wars or starve our neighbors, or take things that aren’t ours, or hurt the people we love, or hurt ourselves the way we so often do.
Temptation is a global challenge. It’s also a personal one. Because the greatest challenge we face is temptation to do and be and say things that will damage people. Once again, our greatest challenge is TEMPTATION!
The Apostle Paul told the Corinthian church, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). Three things we may glean from this verse – three facts about temptation:
- EVERY TEMPTATION WE FACE HAS BEEN FACED BY OTHERS. We are not alone in our struggles.
- WE HAVE NEVER BEEN TEMPTED BY SOMETHING WE DID NOT HAVE THE POWER TO RESIST. It may seem like it at the time, but that’s just a lie from the Evil One, trying to lower our resolve and our resistance. God “will not let you be tempted beyond your ability.”
- GOD PROVIDES A WAY OUT OF EVERY TEMPTATION. God “will provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” Our job is to look for that way out and take it the minute we find it, even as Joseph did when he was confronted by Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39)!
Friends, may we stand upon the truth of God’s Word when those moments of temptation come our way . . . whatever they may be! And, may we resist the temptation and take the way out!
