We read in 1 Kings 19:19, “Elijah went over to [Elisha] and threw his cloak across his shoulders and then walked away.” Elisha did not ask Elijah to be his mentor. And Elijah doesn’t appear to be excited about having Elisha as his disciple. But the cloak of the one was clearly passed to the other. Elisha was seized by Elijah in order to be at Elijah’s disposal. When Jesus seizes us, he bids us to follow him, and we are to be at his disposal.
We all need to have an Elijah that we follow, and we all need to have an Elisha who is following us. For us the goal is always to be, and train others to be, disciples of Jesus Christ. Otherwise, as Dr. Craig Barnes suggests, “our mentoring is a futile effort at saving.”
We need to be looking for someone to help us grow in our faith – someone who is more mature in the faith, someone who will hold us accountable and teach us the way of following Christ. If you are an Elisha, you need to be seeking a mature believer(s) with whom you can develop a relationship of learning and growing. This may come in the context of a small group or in a Sunday school class. If you are an Elijah this morning you need to ask God who you might come alongside in order to assist in the process of spiritual growth.
The Apostle Paul told the Colossians: “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.” (Colossians 1:28) It’s time for the Elijah’s in our midst to find some Elisha’s. Older, more mature, believers need to pass the torch, so to speak, to the next generation of Christians. And it’s time for some Elisha’s to take the torch. Will you be an Elijah? Will you be an Elisha?
