Jesus states in John 10:7, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am THE door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers.”
Notice a theological insight that is evident in this verse. It jumps out immediately. It tells me that there is only ONE door for the sheep. It would be a strange pen, would it not, if there were lots of gaps in the wall?! Where would be the protection? Jesus said I am the door of the sheep. He did not say I am a door. I am the door into security, THE ONLY access into the sheep pen.
Let me say that this is crucial to Christian faith. In this so-called age of tolerance in which we live, in the climate in which all religions are said to be authentic ways to gain access to God, it doesn’t matter what you believe, as long as you believe something, right?!! There are many ways to God, we are told. How can you possibly say that if someone isn’t a Christian, or embraces another faith, that he or she cannot gain access to God?
Christianity is often attacked because of its exclusivity. People say that it is intolerant in the age in which we live to make this kind of claim. There are many self-appointed teachers and “Messiahs” in our world – Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, and many other isms; Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Ba’Hai Faith and the list goes on . . . but Jesus is the true shepherd.
One great proof of the authority of Jesus is the absolute confidence of His followers that He is God’s unique Shepherd. Therefore, may we choose to use the ONLY door to salvation, security, and real satisfaction! And, may we encourage others we encounter to come in through that same door . . . the door of Jesus Christ!!
