Who would you say is the greatest leader in the world today? I would like us, especially during this Christmas season to focus on the GREATEST leader in the history of the world – Jesus Christ – a leader who still reigns today!
Psalm 72 has been called a royal psalm. It is one of two psalms (Psalm 127) ascribed to Solomon, the son of David. This psalm is intensely messianic, speaking in ideal terms of the coming of the great King – THE TRULY GREAT LEADER. None of this psalm can be attributed to an earthly king. There is a clear allusion in this psalm to a future day when the Messiah-King will rule, bringing about a consummation of God’s redemptive plan for all humanity.
We discover in Psalm 72:17, “May his name endure forever; his fame continues as long as the sun. May people be blessed in him; all nations call him blessed!” The “name” of the King represents His presence and power. To know His name is to know something of Him. To be able to call upon His name is to be able to have a relationship with Him. The King’s “name shall endure forever.” It will last “as long as the sun.” People will be “blessed in Him” and, in turn, “all nations shall beblessed in him.” God’s promise to Abraham is fulfilled by the Davidic Messiah.
May we rejoice and celebrate the once and future King, Jesus Christ, who has broken into our world to save sinners!
