Gratitude Changes Everything

Are you a thankful person?  One of the ways we honor God is by saying Thank you to Him and to others!  That’s the essence of thanksgiving for us as Christians – honoring and thanking God.  Thanking God for who He is.  Thanking God for all the things He has done for us.  Thanksgiving is recognizing that all we have comes as a result of God’s goodness.  As we read in John 1:16:

For from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

Jesus’ life, death and resurrection are the events from which Thanksgiving comes.

Have you ever noticed that just a few moments spent contemplating our blessings does wonders for our attitude?  When the scriptures encourage us to give thanks in every circumstance, they are addressing a need basic to our souls.  Thankful people are more joyful than those who constantly complain.

As Lloyd Ogilvie, former chaplain of the Senate, has written,

“Praise is both a response to God’s greatness and goodness and the ultimate level of relinquished trust.  If we can praise God for what has happened to or around us, we are acknowledging that He can use everything.”

And yet we recognize that giving thanks is not always easy.  Sometimes we are in painful places in our lives and unable to see beyond the pain.  Other times we get so preoccupied in day-to-day events that we lose sight of God’s presence and blessings.

Cultivating a grateful attitude doesn’t come naturally to us all the time.  We need to be reminded of our blessings, so we will live as thankful people.  The Bible points out that there are many possible responses to the gift of God’s presence and power.  May we choose to have a grateful heart as we reflect on God’s goodness and grace in our lives!  Gratitude Changes everything!
