During the American Revolution, a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers repairing a small defensive barrier. Their “leader” was shouting instructions, but did not attempt to help them. The rider asked, “Why are you helping these men?” The man retorted with great dignity, “Sir, I am a corporal!” The stranger apologized, dismounted, and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers.
When the job was done, he turned to the corporal and said, “Corporal, next time you have a job like this and not enough men to do it, go to your commander-in-chief, and I will come and help you again.” The man who came by was none other than General George Washington.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to serve. However, many people in churches across our land attend churches but are not willing to serve – they say things like, “I’ve been there and done that before. I did my time. I’m too busy. Let the younger members do that! I could never do something like that,” and the list goes on!
Every one of us has been given some gift that is unique to us. No one else in the church has exactly the gift God has given you. May we desire to be like George Washington and instead of making excuses, get off our horses and look for ways to serve!! God desires to use each one of us to make a difference!!
