Called to Serve

Are you “called” to serve God?  We read in 1 Timothy 1:1, “Paul, and apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope.”  This verse shows us that God saves us and calls us to serve.  The word “apostle” reminds us that Paul was one who was sent out.  The word apostle comes from the word that means to be sent out as an ambassador.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are all sent out.  We, like Paul, are sent out by Jesus Christ to be his ambassadors wherever we go.  If you are a follower of Jesus, you are an ambassador.  When you visit Washington, D.C., you come across various embassies, especially along “Embassy Row” in northwest Washington!  An embassy is an institution that represents one nation inside another nation.  As an ambassador of Jesus Christ, we represent the Kingdom of God in our world!

So, are you “called” to serve God?  Unfortunately, the church today has created a false distinction between those who are supported financially by their ministries and those who are not.  The former (those who are supported financially) are thought to be “called” to serve God; the latter are thought not to be called; they are just “laymen” who volunteer some of their spare time.  But Paul didn’t make that distinction.  If you go by this system, Paul was a layman, because he supported himself in ministry most of the time as a tentmaker.  By the way, how many of you are volunteers in some organization or community group?  You are an ambassador of Jesus Christ and His Kingdom in that group!

The teaching of the Bible is not that some Christians are called to serve God and others are not.  Every Christian is called to serve!  I would suggest that no matter what your official job or station in life may be; you are called to serve the Lord in that job.

May we all acknowledge our “calling” as ambassadors of Jesus and His Kingdom wherever we go!

Wills and Sarah have challenged us with a “call to prayer”!  Please pray that new families will join us for worship, teaching, and fellowship and that we as a church will have wisdom on how to reach them.
Volunteers are still needed as helpers and nursery workers.  If you are apprehensive about serving in this important ministry, consider just “shadowing” us as we lead Hope Navigators on Sundays.  You will learn that it is not hard to make a difference in the lives of our children!  YOU ARE NEEDED!!
