The Ultimate Role Model

Do you have a role model?  Perhaps a teacher, a coach, a parent, or a dear friend?  The Apostle Peter gives us the ultimate role model for enduring mistreatment – Jesus Christ.  We read in 1 Peter 2:21, “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.”  Jesus is our ultimate example!  When the text says that Christ gave us an example that we should follow in his steps, he is suggesting that we are literally to go along in His footsteps.  The figurative meaning of “in his steps” is to follow or imitate someone’s life, living in the same way – following with devotion, dedication, or attention.

According to the United Bible Societies’ New Testament Handbook, “The word for ‘example’ is used only here in the entire New Testament; in classical Greek literature, it has two meanings: (1) a piece of writing from a teacher which a child is expected to trace or imitate, and (2) an artist’s sketch which is prepared for others to color and complete.  Christ therefore left a perfect model, upon which the Christian is expected to pattern his/her life.”

Therefore, even when we endure unfair treatment, we are to do it in the pattern of Jesus’ life.  In this way, we are bearing a powerful testimony to Jesus’ transforming grace – grace that enables us to do something quite unnatural, even supernatural.  If we understand this truth and genuinely believe this truth suffering can take on a whole new significance.

Friends, in all that we encounter in life, including trials and challenges, may Jesus be our role model as we follow in His steps.  And, when others observe us, may they be attracted to Jesus living in us!
