Faith

We read in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”  This definition of faith is fleshed out in the remaining verses and examples of lives lived by faith.

Faith doesn’t look at what we do.  It looks at what God does.  Faith doesn’t put trust in us; it puts trust in God.  Faith renounces our righteousness as filthy rags and looks to the righteousness of another – Jesus Christ.

In 1776 Augustus Toplady of England published a hymn text in The Gospel Magazine as a climax to an article attempting to prove his argument that even as England could never pay her national debt, so man through his own efforts could never satisfy the eternal justice of a holy God – that hymn . . . “Rock of Ages.  The third stanza begins, “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling.”  Friends, that is the most comforting thing in the world.  It is utterly alien to the way we think.

Faith is the amazing gift of God.  It is like the air we breathe; but we have to breathe it.  It is like the bread we eat, but we have to eat it.  It is like the water we drink, but we have to drink it.  When we realize there is nothing we can do apart from trusting God, it is there we receive this amazing free gift.  God has done it all for us.  We are simply called to respond in faith!
