Have you ever wondered how much you are worth? If an item is worth the amount you pay for it, look at how much God paid for you. We read in Romans 5:8: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Even in our sin God valued us. So, you are a priceless, timeless, work of God. “You are an original! You are one of a kind; you are unique. An original is not some photocopy or fake.
If I were to show you a picture of The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo, it would not be the original masterpiece. But you are the real deal! When Kim and I were in Rome, we had the privilege and joy of entering into the Sistine Chapel in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. We stood in awe (and silence) as we looked up at the fresco of The Creation of Adam (among other panels) painted by Michelangelo in 1511. It illustrates the biblical story from the Book of Genesis in which God the Father breathes life into Adam – the first man. Chronologically, it is the fourth in the series of panels depicting episodes from Genesis on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. It was among the last to be completed. It is arguably one of the most famous and most appreciated images in the world.
Now, what if this masterpiece had never been painted? What if Michelangelo just kept his masterpiece for himself, shutting away the beauty of this fresco? If he had, we would have never experienced the serenity of the image; the awe-inspiring beauty of this fresco.
From the beginning of Genesis, we see that God produces beauty, and human beings are the crowning jewel of His creation. This is pointed out by David in Psalm 139:14, where he writes about God’s workmanship and attention to detail, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
The profound truth is that we are living, breathing pieces of art – created by God to live productive, meaning-filled lives. If I could “paint a picture for you,” it is basically this: God is standing in front of the canvas of our lives, wanting to make the canvas of our lives into a work of beauty. You and I hold onto the brushes. But, if we let him, if we give Him the brush, the control of our lives, He will take our lives and turn them into masterpieces. We can be priceless pieces of art in the hand of the Master. Even though your life might be messed up right now, even though you may be going through significant challenges – in the hand of the Artist, common, worthless materials are combined to make a masterpiece. Where do you need to let go of the brush and allow God to take it and create a masterpiece in your life? Where do you need to experience God’s amazing grace in your life?
Valley Young Life/Young Lives – “Young Life thinks the world of kids. We believe that they deserve to know what life can hold for them. Young Life leaders are caring adults who come sharing that hope as well as fun in the form of lasting friendships. We promise to always share Truth about Jesus Christ and have a whole lot of FUN! From club and camp to Campaigners and other activities, teenagers will have blast laughing, going on adventures and exploring their faith. Our leaders are volunteer members of the community or students attending the local college and universities in our area.” (Valley Young Life Website).
Several people in our congregation have supported and volunteered with Young Life. In the past, several ladies from our congregation volunteered time on Monday evenings to watch babies of young mothers so they can participate in Young Lives. Additionally, we support Dave Harris of the Young Life club at Wilson Memorial High School. A few weeks ago (June 3-8) students from our area high schools attended camp at Lake Champion in Glen Spey, NY. Please pray for students who were confronted with the Gospel at camp that they will respond in faith and be drawn to deep relationships with the Lord. Pray also for leaders and students as school starts up in a little over a month. https://valley.younglife.org/Pages/default.aspx
